Dancesmith - camel, weasel, whale

Cynthia Loemij & Mark Lorimer

2013, Seventyseven

After their work on To Intimate, where they embraced ambiguity within a precise and personal vocabulary, longtime Rosas collaborators Mark Lorimer and Cynthia Loemij jump forward into a playful, urgent choreographic world in this new work.

They are accompanied by Clinton Stringer (graphic designer and dancer) who performs a live visual installation - often joining the dance… He moves in his own lucid logic, creating an environment that supports, reflects and depends on its morphing inhabitants.

With a rigorous commitment to their craft as dancers Mark, Cynthia and Clinton arrive in Dancesmith - Camel, Weasel, Whale at a movement language that evolves with unpredictable yet seemingly inevitable adaptations. A looping string of movement-codes invites the viewer to read the dancing as closely as the twists in a thriller’s plot.

In the process of making Dancesmith - Camel, Weasel, Whale, Mark, Cynthia and Clinton deliberately confronted their movement vocabulary with complex 'grammatical' procedures.  The result is a continuous relationship between randomness and selection, chance and choice, recognition and surprise. Dancesmith - Camel, Weasel, Whale finds its way through folding and unfolding, taking shape and crumpling, never returning to the original but transparently evolving into a newly vivid creature.

Cynthia and Mark dance the same role in this work, appearing on alternate evenings. Clinton Stringer provides the missing link, a constant partner to each performer.
